2. A special Day: short graphic novel

Each student will create a short graphic novel based on an incident that happened to them or someone one they know. It must be a true story that happened to a real person who you can document, not “any girl” or “any boy”.

Students can combine drawing with cut-out collage.

It must be at minimum six (6) pages plus a cover that includes a title and an illustration. It should be illustrated in color. Each double page spread should be 11 x 17 inches. So each page will be 11 inches high and 8.5 inches wide.

Upload three paragraph story outline plus reference material documentation before Sunday Sept 19

Students upload pencil storyboard of entire graphic novel before Sunday Sept 26

Students upload pencil drawings of first two pages of their graphic novel before Sunday Oct 3

3. The Drama of Daily Life:

A 4 minute movie

Students will use a story from daily life and turn it into a short film using miniatures. The first step is to write out the story in a series of scenes. The next step is to use corrugated cardboard and cardboard boxes to build a very basic table-top set. The set can incorporate real objects and/or objects that you make.

Next create the characters again using cardboard. Of course, characters and set should be painted colorfully. Acrylic paint works best. Collage can be incorporated. For example, figures can be cut out photographs of people stuck to cardboard.

You will film each scene with you phone positioned horizontally, not vertically. Attach your phone to a flex arm or make a home-made tripod.

You will animate the figures either using stop-motion animation or you can make them puppets or you can combine multiple methods.

You will edit your shots together in Premiere Pro or a video editing program of your choice. You will then add narration, sounds effects and music. All demos will be in Premiere Pro.

Free sound effects can be downloaded here:
